Researchers develop drugs reported to inhibit breast cancer cell growth by up to two times longer than the drugs ever. Drugs are even able to shrink breast tumors is called Afinitor.
Researchers tested the drug on 724 patients with breast cancer. Patients were given regular cancer inhibitor drugs can last up to 3.2 months.
While patients taking Afinitor can last up to 7.8 months with no signs of cancer cell growth.
This drug will attack a protein called mTOR that cause cancer cells to grow. Stephen Johnston, a professor who studies breast cancer at the Royal Marsden NHS Trust, London, said that this is the first drug that can inhibit and reduce the breast cancer cells.
It gives great hope in women. Effect is quite dramatic, and pave the way for possible treatments that can help cancer patients live for many years says cancer expert Professor Karol Sikora.
Nearly half of patients have their tumors stopped growing or even shrink. While only a quarter of patients who took the drug had a similar obstacle.
Approximately 12 percent of patients taking Afinitor told that their tumors shrink by 30 percent or more.
Novartis, the drug maker said that about 14,000 women get extra time to gather with their families without worrying about their tumor cell growth.
Even so, the ability to cure cancer Afinitor remains untested. Researchers hope to find out by further research.
If the drug has been launched into the market, the cancer patient must pay 2935 pounds a week to get it.
