How to Repair Outlook .pst File Using scanpst.exe

Errors have been detected in the file 'file_path'. Quit all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe).

I got this error message when I tried to access Inbox folder in Microsoft Outlook 2007 application. The message says to use scanpst.exe file to fix the problem, but it doesn’t tell me where I can find the file.

I open Windows Explorer, right click on C:\Program Files folder, and search for scanpst.exe file.

Windows Explorer found the file in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 but it could be in different location if you’re using different version of MS Office.

Double click the file, and click the Browse button to locate .pst file, and then click Start button to repair.

If you’re using Windows XP, the .pst file can be found in C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

If you can’t find Local Settings folder, you have to show hidden folder by changing Folder Options in Windows Explorer. Click Tools => Folder Options => View => choose Show hidden files and folders, and press OK button.
